Decluttering expired products from my collection
April 03, 2018
A couple of weeks ago I watch one of Beauty News's videos on YouTube, and in the video they checked how old some of their oldest makeup. They did this by entering the batch code of the particular product in a search bar on either checkfresh.com or checkcosmetics.net, or they used this app called Beauty Keeper.
When I watched the video I started thinking about how old some of the makeup in my collection must be, so I decided to go trough my products. I knew before I started that I had some old products that I don't use anymore, but I didn't think that there would be so many, and the worst of it is that some of these went bad several years ago.
The first category I started with, where I knew that I had some old products, was foundations and BB/CC creams.
The first product I knew had to be expired was the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation. This was one of the first foundations I ever bought, and it was before I started using full coverage makeup, so I knew that it was expired just by thinking about how long it is since I opened it. But I seriously wasn't prepared for what the app was going to say: the foundation was made in 2010! Which means that the foundation expired already back in 2013. I almost fell of my chair when I saw this, I couldn't believe I've had it for that long.
The next product I knew was old in my collection was the L'Oreal True Match, firstly because it's in the old packaging, and secondly because it's in the lightest color, which means that I haven't been using this since I began using self tanner. So when I entered the batch code in the Beauty Keeper app I was surprised that it wasn't as old as I thought, but still it was made in 2015, and it has a life span of 36 months, which means that it is expired even if I hadn't opened it, but I probably opened it the same year that it was made, so it most definitely is expired either way.
The Revlon Colorstay Foundation I couldn't find on any of the websites or the app, when I punched in what I think was the batch code I got as an response that it was made only a few weeks ago, and I can promise you that it wasn't. This one I've probably had for almost 4 years, and it's been open almost all that time, so this one is about time to throw in the trash.
The Ole Henriksen CC Creme I couldn't find on any of the sites either, but when I started looking at this, I realized that it has a date stamp, and it said that it expired in January 2016. So it's definitely about time to part with this. It never was my favorite anyway so I don't really mind throwing this out.
A few years ago when I really started getting in to makeup, my mom was obsessed with Oriflame, and their products. So when I started to show some interest in makeup my mom ordered me all kinds of stuff, and now when I went through my collection I realized that I still had some of the Oriflame products. I knew these had to be old because my mom stopped buying Oriflame products over two years ago.
The first one of the Oriflame products I found was the Matte Velvet foundation, and I believe this was one of the first makeup prroducts I ever got. It is even in the lightest shade so it is from before I started using self tan. When I checked the batch code on the Beauty Keeper app my chin fell to my knees, it expired in 2013!! I know I haven't used it in a few years, but I know I've used it after 2013. I was so disgusted when I realized how old it was, so obviously it went straight in the bin!
The next product I found from Oriflame was the CC Cream, but this one I knew had to be a little bit newer since it wouldn't have matched me before I started self tanning. But I was almost as shocked when I checked the life time of this one, it expired back in 2014.. I can't believe I've hold on to these for that long! And the worst of it all is that I think I actually used this last summer..
The last product from Oriflame that I found in my collection was this old Cucumber face mist, and I couldn't even remember that I had this, so I predicted that it would have to be quite old, and so it was. It also expired in 2014, and when I opened it up to smell it I could definitely tell that it was old, it smelled so bad! Since I didn't remember that I even had this, and since it is almost full I would assume that I didn't like it that much when I first got it, so I just shoved it to the back of one of my drawers, and there it stayed for the past four years.

I thought that when I first did this declutter I would do my whole collection, so next I moved on to concealers and primers. There were definitely some products that I totally had forgotten about and that had to be expired, and it definitely was. In my concealer drawer I first found this BareMinerals Well-Rested concealer, and if I'm not mistaken these are taken out of production so you can only imagine how old this is. I tried looking up the batch code but I couldn't find BareMinerals on any of the websites. But still, this one I bought the first time I went to the states and that was in 2014, so I know for a fact that this is definitely expired.
In my concealer drawer I also found another Oriflame product, this color correction wheel, or what it's called. This one I remember I got from my mom when I started to worry about my red cheeks and my dark under eye circles, and she didn't want me to begin using foundation quite yet, so she gave me this one instead. I must say, I probably looked sick using only this and nothing else. This one is actually so old that the batch code has rubbed of, so I can't check exactly how old it is, but I know for a fact that its over 5 years old.
The last concealer I found that I knew had to be quite old was this Clinique one. I remember buying this one, one of the first high end products I bought, and I asked the lady behind the counter for a full coverage under eye concealer, and I got home and tried it on, and I immediately hated it, it is so thick, and impossible to blend out, and it creases so bad! Unfortunately we can't return used makeup here in Norway, so it just stayed in my drawer for all these years, I don't think I've even touched it since that one time. This is a few years ago now, and since I'm going to get rid of it anyway I decided to throw it in this post. The concealer only expired last month, but still, bye!
When it comes to primer I don't have that many, I've either given the ones I didn't like away or I've sold them. These two I did enjoy back in the day when I used to use them, but I found other products that I enjoyed more and these were simply forgotten. The NYX eye shadow base had to be the oldes product, because I remember purchasing this when I went on vacation several years ago, I think we were in Italy or something. So when I checked the batch code my assumptions were right, this already expired back in 2015. The Make Up For Ever one wasn't quite as old, it only expired in September 2017. But I haven't used it in forever since I fell in love with the mattifying primer from Make Up For Ever instead.
The last category I decided to look in was my powder products. Powder products usually last longer that liquids and creams, but I knew I had some products in there that were quite old. The first product I found that I knew had to be almost ancient was the Priori mineral foundation powder. This one I couldn't find on any of the websites, but know it is expired a long time ago. I got this from my mom probably five years ago, after she had had it for a while, but she didn't like it so she gave it to me. I didn't use it much either because it was waaay to dark for my fair skin, so it hasn't been used since I got it, but now it's time to get rid of it, it just lays in my drawer and collects dust.
The two other powder products that without a doubt was expired was these two elf products. These products was some of the products I ordered the first time I ordered something online many, many years ago. So I had to laugh a little when I found out I still had these, and that these are some of the products that started my makeup obsession. When I checked the production date of the elf blush it was made in January 2013, which means that it expired over two years ago, and I used it probably a couple of months ago.. The eye shadow wasn't that old actually, it only expired in November 2017. But still, I hardly ever use these, and there is no reason to hold on to them, especially when they are expired.

Now that these products are out of my collection, I have room for some new goodies!
Do you have some products in your collection that you think is expired?
